Nuts and Bolts: A Flickr Widget

In addition to the Twitter widget in the sidebar, you might also have noticed a Flickr widget. Flickr is a wonderful tool for both finding and sharing images online, including literally millions of images that are CC-licensed for your re-use.

To create the Flickr widget in this blog sidebar, here are the steps I followed:

1. Create album. I created a Flickr album. I upload images to this album that come from my Growth Mindset memes blog. The Flickr album has a specific webpage address:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/38299630@N05/sets/72157655484113601

2. Create show. To create a slideshow from that album, I just add /show to the end of the album address:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/38299630@N05/sets/72157655484113601/show

3. Customize embed. To embed the album I click on "Share in the upper right-hand corner, and then "customize" so that I can adjust the widget of the slideshow to make it fit nicely in the very narrow blog sidebar.

4. Copy-and-paste. I copy-and-paste the resulting HTML code into the HTML view of the blog sidebar widget.

All done!

Now that slideshow automatically updates whenever I add a new image to my Flickr album!

I've embedded a 400-pixel-width version of the slideshow here. :-)
